Chlorhexidine is a antimicrobial agent which belongs to the biguanide family. chlorhexidine is stable within the pH range of 5-8. If pH is above 8.0 chlorhexidine base is precipitated. In acidic conditions there is gradual deterioration of activity because the compound is less stable.It was the first antimicrobial agent shown to stop dental plaque formation. Chlorhexidine is enlisted in the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.
